There’s a lot of things we pay little attention to – until the creek rises. We don’t know what to do or how to react. Most of the time it’s hang on and hope for the best. Well, I think we can do better than that. In fact, the Bible tells us we do better.
1) God will never put more on us than we can stand. Paul teaches us in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that God will not place on us more than our faith can handle. I often wish that God would not trust me with so much. It is at these moments that I realize I am nothing without God. You will stand up under anything as long as your faith in God remains clear and strong.
2) No matter what comes against you, God is ALWAYS in the majority. I have never experienced a serious earthquake, but my world has been shaken. When doubt clouds my mind, when the pressure builds, and the fear takes hold, I cry out to my God. I know God is near and working, even though I can’t always see. I am reminded of Elijah’s prayer for his servant to ‘see’ what God was doing in 2 Kings 6:15-18. This is what God will do for us as well.
3) When the situation becomes difficult, it is ALWAYS a matter of trust. We are called to ‘trust’ God during difficult times. This is not a matter of head knowledge, but the act of grasping hold of God and hanging onto to God with a clenched fist. We must act very much like the woman in Mark 5:25-35. She acted boldly, not just in belief but in a grasping, clenching, hanging on type of trust.
4) Nothing ever works out the way WE want or expect. But whatever is unexpectedly lost to us in this world, we will regain 100 times in heaven. The key is learning to trust that God will do ALL that he has promised. God has promised to never leave us orphans (John 14:18), to hear our cries for help (Psalm 72:12), or turn away a sinner calling out for salvation (Romans 10:13).
This is what I believe God will do. Why? Because God has already accomplished these within me.
